Jekyll emerged from seclusion briefly, only to slam the door shut again. Seeking answers, Utterson visited Dr. Lanyon. The change was shocking; Lanyon was death-pale, visibly older, with the look of a man who had seen a ghost. 'I have had a shock,' he said, his voice trembling, 'and I shall never recover.' He refused to speak Jekyll's name, regarding him as one who is already dead.
