'I am quite resigned to being merely tolerable,' Elizabeth declares, eyes twinkling. 'I shall endeavor not to tempt any gentlemen this evening with my middling charms.' Her wit transforms mortification into merriment. Yet she notices Mr. Darcy glancing her way more than once with an expression she cannot quite interpret.
